There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.
Your little one, the baby you held, the child you snuggled, has changed and you can't understand why. They are distant, angry, tearful, and sad all at once. But now, their behaviors are not okay, even out of control. You may have heard other adults comment on the behaviors, expressing their own concerns. Or maybe you haven't, but you don't want it to get that far.
In a world where information is at our fingertips, children and adolescents can struggle with emotions in ways adults can't comprehend. And as the parent, you want to fix it. But you can't. And now, you feel lost and don't know how to help them.
My desire when counseling children and adolescents is to bridge the gap between you and your child. My hope is that you enjoy seeing your child or teen, and that they want to be close with you.
When working with this population, I believe parental involvement can be crucial, but not always necessary. Sometimes, particularly with older teens, they just need a non-judgmental space to explore and process their experience. Othertimes, the relationship between you and your child is the piece that needs the most healing. My approach focuses on helping build connections, increasing communication, and finding unique problem solving solutions. With children and adolescents, I focus on creative approaches in sessions, such as utilizing play, art, and sand tray.
I offer individual therapy for children 12 years and older. For children under 12 years, my focus is family therapy and parent coaching. This is because my experience has shown that the best way for me to help younger children is to help the parents learn how to better manage the behaviors at home. Sessions are 45-50 minutes in length and occur once every week or two weeks. The total number of sessions will depend on your goals and treatment needs.
I offer a free 20-minute consultation for those interested in services. It will give you a chance to describe your particular issue, ask any questions about my experience and services, and to come to a decision about whether I am the right fit for you.
